I hope you've known the basics of creating your own blog as per niche and zeal? The first thing you need to know is what colour best fits your blog's niche! It matters a lot... Don't just mumble jumble colors and say you've finetuned your blog. It may seem disgusting to visitors.
There was a case of Christopher Columbus asking for a review for naijalodge few weeks ago when angel cool replied that the color isn't sexy (too light-greenish) and may scare away female visitors lol.
Make your blog's color(s) blend and attractive.
Now, let me quickly hint you with this:
For a news/magazine blog, Red+white+touch of black will do as it interpretes your niche; For a tech updates blog, Black+white+touch of blue will do; For a Social Media blog, Blue+White+touch of Grey will do..... Though your combinations might not be like those but give it a fine color.
Give your main widget titles a solid color and an averagely deep background (not too dark and not with the same color of the title).
Secondly, you need to structure your template in a way that there'll be lots of neat stumblings by your visitors. You Grab? Don't scatter your widgets so as to make your blog occupied! No! Remove unuseful widgets such as clocks, video bar (Acceptable for News blogs), Traffic banner counter and likes...
As far as I'm concerned, the important widgets a blog must have are popular posts widget (You
can rename it on your blog), related posts, feedburner email subscription box, blog archive, profile widget- At least fill something reasonable (Very Very important on a blog), Recent comments, Facebook like/comment box, share buttons (not too much but with nice placements), you know what can benefit your blog through your readers ....
Make sure your traffic bringing plugins are close to the top because most (especially nigerians) don't like reading too much so move them up and push the less important plugins down.
If you have third party banners on your blog e.g ontoplist banner, yousaytoo, linkreferral bla bla bla, move them together in one place and arrange according to their sizes don't scatter them all over your blog. It'll look messy!
In case you have widgets/images that are too long or wide thereby exceeding the size of your sidebar or widget area, just reduce the size by using width="Preferred figure" , height="Preferred size in figure" or both depending on how you want to resize the html widget/plugin.
By the time you finish giving your blog a neat look, visitors will like it and be friendly because by the time they spend up to 30secs, they've already seen another interesting stuff on your blog without wasting time.
Also, I'd recommend using Template designer for finetuning your blog. It's very simple and easy to use because it's written in English language. Don't say it's complex, open your template designer, start playing with the features (Not rough play sha o), the more you work on it, the more you get familiar with it. Don't shy away!
Using Template designer is a very great way to design a blogger blog.
You can search google for tutorials how to use template designer.
Ask people to check if your site is looking fine and organised because your own taste of design might not tally with that of your visitors so keep asking people till you get more of +ve reply.
